Laser Liposuction (Smartlipo MPX)

Fat removal by traditional liposuction has been around for many years now, amid mixed press regarding its invasive nature.  It required general anaesthesia, was extremely painful, caused bleeding, bruising, loose skin and required long recovery times following the treatment.

Since its introduction in November 2007, Cynosure Smartlipo Laser Body Sculpting has become the most sought after aesthetic procedure in the United States.

Now the next generation of the Laser Body Sculpting technology, Smartlipo MPX by Cynosure has come to the United Kingdom.

Smartlipo MPX Before and After Treatment

Kirkwood Fyfe Aesthetic first looked at a Laser Lipolysis system several years ago. The theory of Laser Lipolysis was good but further technological development was required. Following extensive research, the Cynosure Smartlipo Multiplex (MPX)
was launched.

The SmartLipo MPX is the only dual-wavelength laser that the FDA has cleared to liquefy fat and tighten skin.  Smart Lipo MPX causes only minor bruising and muscle aches, and actually tightens skin by remodelling the collagen left behind, similar to methods used to repair acne scars.  The skin tightening effect means that after fat has been removed, there is less unsightly slack skin at the site of the treatment. Another important issue is that after the fat breakdown, the fat is aspirated (effectively removed) from the site.

Smart Lipo MPX helps increase blood vessel coagulation and spreads heat more evenly, while the lasers utilise incisions so small no stitches are required. It uses the new Multiplex system which has made it possible for two wavelengths to be fired sequentially, which allows maximum fat liquefaction and the tightening of the skin.

Who performs the Procedure?
Laser Liposuction is undertaken by fully trained plastic surgeons

What areas can be treated?
Abdomen, Inner Thighs, Outer Thighs, Batwings, Cheek & Jowl, Knees, Arms, Upper Back, Lower Back, Saddle Bags, Buttocks.

Who is a suitable candidate for Laser Liposuction?
It is most suited to patients who are close to their ideal weight but have one or more stubborn areas of fat that do not respond to weight loss or exercise.  Patients who exercise regularly and have a healthy lifestyle will obtain the best results.

Can obese patients have Laser Liposuction?
Laser Liposuction is not suitable for moving large masses of fat.  It is for removing moderate amounts of fat to allow sculpting of the body.   There is an upper weight limit based on body mass index which will indicate if you are a suitable candidate or not.

Does it hurt?
You feel the sensation of the anaesthetic going in but once it is administered you shouldn’t feel any pain.  You may feel the movement of the cannula but that should be all.  Although sedation may be used, you will be awake at all times.

Do I need more than one treatment?
It depends on the amount of fat in each area but normally one treatment can achieve a good result. Revisions of a treatment area are performed for half price.

What are the side effects of laser liposuction?
Slight tenderness, numbness or lumpiness.  These should resolve with time.

Can Skin Tightening (without the liposuction process) be performed with Smartlipo MPX?
Due to having 2 wavelenghts, Smartlipo MPX can tighten skin, treat cellulite and stretch marks.

The Procedure explained
Laser Liposuction (or laser lipolysis as it is also known) is an advanced method of removing fatty tissue from problem areas of the body.   The area to be treated will be marked on the body using a special pen.  This then allows the surgeon to determine the areas where the anaesthetic needs to be administered for maximum comfort and also shows them the area to be treated when operating the laser beam. The surgeon will make a small incision, or more than one incision (depending on size of area being treated).  The anaesthetic is then administered.  A cannula containing the laser beam is inserted into the desired area via the incision.  The laser beam’s photo mechanical effect ruptures the fat cells membrane, causing them to swell and over a month or two they are absorbed then eliminated by the body.  The area treated is then aspirated, to remove any fluids or fat from the treatment area.

After the procedure is completed you will feel the area tender.  The surgeon will advise that you take some paracetamol to ease any pain.  The wounds (which are extremely small) will normally be sutured, and it is likely that they will disappear altogether with time.

Swabs will be applied to these wounds to absorb any seepage which usually subsides within a day or two.  Depending on the area treated, you will be given a support garment.  In areas such as abdomen, which is a large area, it is recommended that you wear the support garment for two weeks.  Due to the motion of the cannula, the area where it was inserted can often tighten up and feel hard. Patients are advised to massage the area treated as this can help to reduce the hardening of the tissue and keeps the skin supple.

Results
Laser Liposuction reduces the number of fat cells in the body, producing a more contoured look.  Some patients can see an obvious change on the day of surgery but as the fat cells go through a growth and rupturing cycle, it is normally up to 2 –3 months to see a final result.  Expectations of leaving no long term “tell-tale” marks are realistic.  To obtain the best results, a healthy diet and regular exercise must be followed to ensure no further weight gain. (The surgeon will advise you when you can commence exercise again after treatment).

Laser Liposuction compared to traditional Liposuction

Laser Liposuction (Smartlipo MPX)
Local anaesthesia
Small incisions (laser probe of only 1-2mm is used)
Open sutures to encourage drainage - no stitches
Liquifies fat
Tightens skin during procedure
Minimal scarring and bruising

  Laser Liposuction (Smartlipo MPX)

Traditional Liposuction
General anaesthesia
Larger incisions due to larger suctioning cannula
Closed sutures
Suctions fat
Sagging skin can be left
Greater scarring and bruising due to the more aggressive nature of the treatment.
